100 GATES PROJECT
ROLE: CONTRIBUTING ARTIST
Partnering with the 100 Gates Project
I was selected to paint a roll down storefront gate in the Lower East Side. Once selected, I worked with the store owners to concept and finalize a design for the gate, which as an added bonus, just happened to be on the building I lived in. Through a generous grant of 200 dollars by the project, I was allowed to purchase all the supplies I needed to complete the installation.
THE GATE BEFORE I STARTED PAINTING
PAINTING THE GATE BLACK
PAINTING THE TOP OF THE GATE
I needed to paint the entire gate and frame black before I could hand paint the mural so I started late one evening with the intention of letting it dry over night. Waking up at 5A.M. the next morning I started the mural by doing a loose sketch with chalk before moving on to the white paint. The gate artwork remains to this day and was an amazing experience for me to not only give to the city I loved but allowed me to leave something behind when I left.
